Waymo vs Wayve for luxury car buyers
What self-driving technology means for your next car
Waymo is further ahead in deployed driverless passenger services. Wayve is developing an AI driving system for vehicle manufacturers and runs supervised rides with Uber in London. For a luxury car buyer, the important question is which capabilities are available on the exact vehicle you plan to own, in the country where you will use it.[1][2][3]
A robotaxi journey demonstrates what a particular service can do. It does not establish what a privately purchased car can do. This guide separates current services from future product plans, then sets out the checks we recommend for a UK purchase or an export to a Gulf Cooperation Council country.
How Waymo and Wayve compare
| Buyer question | Waymo | Wayve |
|---|---|---|
| What can passengers use now | WaymoDriverless passenger rides in multiple US cities, within defined service areas.[1] | WayveSupervised Uber rides in London, with a trained private hire driver onboard.[2] |
| What is relevant to car ownership | WaymoA ride service is not proof that the same capability is available on a retail car. | WayveA Mercedes-Benz production agreement targets future vehicles.[3] |
| What does this tell a buyer | WaymoDriverless services are already operating in specific settings. | WayveManufacturer integration is progressing, but model and market details matter. |
What the Mercedes agreement means
On 22 September 2026, Wayve announced a production agreement to integrate its AI driving technology into future Mercedes-Benz cars for private customers, with introduction planned to start within the following two years. The announcement describes advanced urban and highway driving assistance. It does not confirm that a Mercedes on sale today includes Wayve technology, that these future cars will drive everywhere without supervision, or that a particular UK or GCC model will receive it. Models, prices and UK launch dates are not specified in the announcement.[3]
Our buying recommendation is to value a car on its documented specification and usable features at purchase. Treat an unconfirmed software upgrade as a possibility, rather than a reason to pay more.
Five checks before buying or exporting
For a buyer moving a luxury car between markets, we recommend recording the following against the vehicle identification number, or VIN. Ask the manufacturer or its authorised representative for written confirmation where availability is unclear.
1Confirm the exact vehicle
Record its model year, original sales market, factory options and installed software. Ask for the build specification and the current feature list. A model name alone is too broad to establish its driving capabilities.
2Understand driver responsibility
Ask whether the feature assists a supervising driver or is authorised to drive itself under specified conditions. The Highway Code distinguishes assisted driving from self-driving: with assisted driving, the driver remains responsible. Hands-free operation alone does not answer the supervision question.[4]
3Check the destination country
Specify the actual destination, such as Qatar, the UAE or Saudi Arabia. Request confirmation that the exact feature can be activated and used there on this VIN. Include local operating restrictions in the enquiry; an announcement about one market does not establish availability elsewhere.
4Establish costs and support
Ask whether the function requires a subscription, a transferable software entitlement, connectivity or an account tied to the original market. Confirm who can diagnose, update and repair the system after export, and what warranty support applies.
5Keep the evidence with the purchase
Retain the dated specification, relevant manual sections and written answers. Separate active features from announced upgrades in your comparison of vehicles. If a feature is essential, resolve its availability before committing to the purchase.
Questions luxury car buyers ask
Is Wayve ahead of Waymo?
On deployed driverless passenger services, Waymo is ahead. That comparison does not settle which company will achieve the widest manufacturer adoption or which system will best suit a future privately owned car.[1][2]
Should I delay a purchase for Wayve technology?
We would only make that decision around a confirmed model, delivery date, destination-market specification and price. The Mercedes announcement alone does not supply that vehicle-specific buying information.[3]
Will advanced driving technology improve resale value?
Do not assume a premium. Assess current comparable vehicles and the features a future buyer can actually use. We would not build a purchase budget around an unverified future resale uplift.
Include driving technology in your sourcing brief
Tell Sparkly Zetta which car you want, where it will be registered and which driving features matter to you. Include those requirements alongside your budget and preferred specification so they can be addressed during sourcing.
